What is the highest level a cat can fall from unharmed?

I am thinking of moving into a new apartment and I was just wondering if anyone has any idea how high cats can fall from and remain unharmed? He is an indoor cat, but obviously I don't want to live on the 20th floor in case he one day escapes from a window. What floor would be the highest I could live on do you think?
Thanks for your help!
xx Emmie
Answers:
Only one way to find that out...
hold on i'll give it a go from the 15th floor.
i'll let you know the result in ten minutes........
iv thrown one from higher than that n its still here to love me
10 stories?? *tested* it was an accident!!
Keep ur cat inside! Cat's are good. They'll find a way down either way. But I wouldn't go any higher then the 2nd floor just to be safe!
basement lol well then you don't have to worry besides the lowest level will be the coolest in the summer to.
about 30 feet
Actually, I have heard that there is a height that cats will more than likely be hurt when falling from but a little higher they have a better chance of not being hurt. Weird, eh? I think the idea is that the cat, when falling from a second story window does not have enough time to react before hitting the ground. However, from a third story window the cat has time to react and get ready for the landing.
As for the exact heights, I am not sure. I think your best bet would be to prevent the cat from having access to balconies or from being able to get out of windows.
They wont just go for it and jump from any high they would weigh it up 1st. Mine has got down of the roof 15 - 20 ft.
None! Wha do you think, they can fly? Can you fall from any hight and be unharmed? No. The 9 lives of a cat is a myth! The poor cat can be badly hurt if falling from even 1-2 floor height.
The best way is to prevent. Do not let the windows or balcony door open, EVER! Yell at the cat if looks like it's trying to jump on ..
You would be surprised how high a cat can jump or fall with out getting hurt. I live on the second floor and my cat fell of the balcony and he was fine no injuries.
Ah, I have no idea. I knew friends who lived in NYC in a high rise. Their cat actually got blown off the porch and landed at the feet of the doorman. It did not live and the doorman quit it upset him so. No one realizes how windy it gets the higher you go. I'd try for the 3rd floor. I would not take any chances. I'd be a wreck living any higher than that just for my own self.
I was not surprised at all the sicko answers you got. Some people suck.
If you are afriad of it stay on the 1st or 2nd floor. Even the 2nd floor could cause harm.
Well a cat has a better chance of surviving falling off a 15 story building then falling off a 5 story building. I have no clue how it was in a book, it has to do with science.
Don't live high
A cat can usually withstand a fall up to 3 stories. Anything from 4 - 7 stories, is not good. When a cat falls from anything higher than 7 stories, it can position itself into a para-shoot position and can brace and slow the fall down. Between 4 -7 stories is high enough they can't get into position in time. Above 7 they could survive, but would probably suffer from broken legs.
If you're looking at the 20th floor or even at the 12th floor of an apartment, I would suggest making sure the windows have screens. If not, ask for them so your cat doesn't fall out. Use lattice around a balcony area with planters so they can't look over and fall.
I have actually performed many experiments with this question. kittens stopped survivng after the second story while most Cats would die after third story but some of the bigger cats also bit it before the kittens. so i think it all depends on the cat.
A cat can fall 20 miters without being hurt. When they are Kittens they can't as they are just learning basic ability skills my friends cat can climb a ladder!!! but can't get back down.
I wouldn't push it further than two storeys, any higher and he could do some serious damage to himself.
Hope this helps.
No distance is safe. What you need to do is to make sure that he/she cannot get onto the window ledge. If you have a balcony, put netting over it.

What is the healthiest dry or canned cat food?

without telling me to cook it myself or give him a raw diet please tell me the best dry food and canned or pouches i can give them. they are completely indoor cats and are 3 and 4.

Felidae. Wellness. Newman's Own Organic pet food. None of these were involved in food recalls and all are superior products.
Here's their site (Canidae and Felidae) with info on ordering and store locations in your area.

I give my cats Purina One Formula dry cat food. They don't throw it up and it's healthier for them.
I suggest dry food. Dry food fights tarter. It is less messy. You don't need to deal with the smell. Make sure if you buy dry food or wet food in the ingredients it doesn't say by-product. It is veeeeery bad. The main ingredient should be chicken.
Our cat is about 3 years old. We have been feeding him dry Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul, Adult Light for about a year. He was eating dry Science Diet Adult Light. He had been itching, scratching and shedding a lot and he had the Hair Ball Cough all of the time. Chicken Soup was recommended to me by the Pet Food Express staff and it has improved his skin 100%. His breath (and saliva) do not have that nasty cat-spit smell anymore and his #2 is not as stinky. And, he really seems to enjoy eating it (he was very uninterested in treats when we offered him the choice: new food or treats).
It is all on what your cat needs for vitamins, and nutrients, and if it has a health problem. I think that february is also dental month for them and you can get a discount on cleaning of their teeth, you might have to ask your local vet though, it depends on the area.. Good Luck! :)
I posted some websites that have great info on the benefits of dry vs wet cat food. :D
While reviewing my research below, consider these tips: cat's require variety in their food. Try to get something with a little variety. Cat's are also finicky, and after carefully sniffing at your latest gourmet offering, they may walk away in complete dissatisfaction.
Cat's are usually sensible about how much food they eat, and very few will over-eat.

From my personal experience with my cats, I would actually reccomend Iams.. It's available at most Wal-Marts in the pet isle, and at most pet-stores. It decreases need to eliminate in cats %26 dogs.. and it's generally healthy for your cats. Not to mention, my cats love the taste! With Iams, I don't think your cat not liking the taste is something to worry about -- unless of course they've already been adjusted to a special formula cat-food, then the chances are a little higher.
just put them together DU-OH
I will tell you this. There is no such thing as good dry food. Merrick or wellness are good cannned choices and are top of the line human grade. fancy feast is a middle grade food
Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat鈥檚 health
Contrary to what you may have heard, dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i鈥檚 and a host of other problems. The problems with it are that they are loaded with carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. Most of the moisture a cat needs is gotten
out of the food and 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Also, most use horrible ingredients and don't use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.
You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn't have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Please read about cat nutrition.

We get our cat food right from the vet, both dry as well as wet and with your cat who is male, they say to enure that they do get the wet since male cats are much more prone to developing urinary tract infections (UTI). The name of the food that we get from the vet and it's usually for cats with colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease or inflammation of the colon/large intestine, is Royal Canine, rabbit and green pea. My female tabby really enjoys it and doesn't know that it's more healthy for her with her digestive problems :) [She also gets some medicine for the colitis including Gastroplex, an herbal supplement, from her vet who practices alternative as well as conventional medicine.]
The best dry food is Purina One (my cats eat Chicken %26 Rice Formula). If you read the ingredients the main ingredient is chicken whereas other dry foods list cereals as the main ingredient. If you live in Australia you can purchase a 1.5kg bag for abot $10-$12 and do the 30 day challenge buy going on the internet and registering. They send you a CD and a form to send in with your receipt and they will send you a cheque for the amount you spent. You need to slowly change your cat over to this my mixing with its regular food and increase this food and decrease the old food slowly over several days. Then you need to feed your cat the food for thirty days and see the difference. I got my cat from the pound and she was skinny and her fur was thin and dull. The main difference I saw was that she put on weight (she is still slim though) and she has a healthy shiny full coat. With wet food I don;t really see much of a difference as the main ingredient is usually left over meat products.

What is the easiest way to toilet train an adult cat?

I have a 2 year old male and a 1 year old female, both are fixed and I would like to train them to use the toilet in as few steps as possible. I am not at home much of the day as I work and go to school.
Answers:
You start by bringing the litterbox closer to the toilet each day. When it is close to it, start raising the box up with large books to bring it up higher. Eventually, you will have the box at the same height as the toilet so next step would be to securely place it on the seat. Once the cats are used to this, take the box away, leaving something in the toilet so they get the picture. Hope this works for you.
If they're targeting specific spots, the the best way is to put double sided tape around the area you don't want them to 'go' on. They'll learn no to 'go' on those spots, because they think their paws will get stuck.
You can move the litter box closer and closer and then use a toilet training kit for inside the bowl.
http://www.citikitty.com/
You want to make sure that neither kitty falls in because that could make them too frightened to even use their litter box any longer. Just take your time. Cats are high fear animals and they need to get used to things little by little.
If you push the time too hard, it could backfire.
You will then have to make sure that the cats always have access to the toilet, i.e. the seat has to stay up and the door open at all times.
If you can manage it, it is a very good solution to all the billions of tons of kitty litter out there.

What is the easiest way to move 2 cats and 2 dogs from WI to WA? Least stressful and cost efficient?

Answers:
try to do practice trips with the cats (not to the vet, but just around the neighborhood and for longer times) -
at first they will always equate the car with vet (as thats typically the ONLY time they go in the car) but with time, they will relax and calm down
(my vet is 30 minutes away and my cats cry for like 10, then sleep the rest of the way, i have them in carriers (i take them 1 at a time because its easier) next to me on the passenger seat.)
but the more practice that they have in the car, the more relaxed they will be with the situation.
I would suggest driving, dogs usually enjoy road trips. As for the cats, I'd put them in cat carriers, and hopefully, they'll start to enjoy the ride. Some cats need to be sedated for long drives, depends on the cats.
umm i would drive because u can stock up on gas beforhand and just bring a tank with you so while your on the way you may just need to refill 4 or 5 times
If you are driving from WI to WA then by car is the most efficient way. I moved 14 cats, 1 dog, and 1 horse from AZ to NC then 14 cats 1 dog, 4 horses, 1 fish, and 4 hamsters from NC to NJ and by car is the easiest because you know where they are and that they are not in trouble and the only expense you incur is gas money and the cost of the cages
Ship by air. And have your vet sedate them, or they usually give the meds to you so that you can give them to the cats at the correct time. Easist way I've ever seen, unless your cats have gone on trips with you before. Ours went camping with us!
If you are planning on driving, then have them in the back seat of your car. Cats are usually quiet so they can roam around the car. If you have a small/medium dog, then you can put them in a crate. But stop at least once an hour, to let them out to go to the bathroom, and sniff around. If the start crying, then give em' a little love. Big dogs, should be separated if you are taking to cars. The stopping is the same for both sizes.
Are you driving?
If you are there are drops, natural, you can ask at the pet store to help them relax and sleep during a trip. Of course they have to have a crate to secure them during the trip.
Ask the vet he should be able to help with that. This could be very stressful for the animal as well.

What is the easiest way to feed a cat?

i want to feed a cat and i dont know which food to feed it with but i dont want something that will take me a long time to get or hard to make.i will be glad if i get good answers.
Answers:
Buy a bag of good quality dry food. Iams is available about anywhere. Pour some in a clean bowl, provide another clean bowl of water, and that's all that is necessary!
I supplement my cats' diets with a part of a can of cat food for dinner, I scoop some out on a paper plate, cut it into cat size bites, and put that down for them. Then I just throw the plate away when they're done.
There are also all kinds of treats available. Friskies hairball remedy is what I feed mine. 4-6 pieces 2-3 times a week. They like it, and it keeps them from yakking up hairballs. Keeping the litterbox clean, providing a scratching post, getting them neutered and vaccinated, and taking them to the vet once a year or if they get sick or injured, and regularly brushing them, is all you have to do to keep a cat happy and healthy.
Some like lots of toys and playtime, others prefer to keep to themselves, it just depends on your cat. Good luck!
The most convenient cat food is dry food. Canned food isn't all that inconvenient either. I feed my cat a preprepared raw food called Stella and Chewys and that is easy as well. I just pop it in the fridge at night to defrost for her breakfast. Check out this link to learn more about how to pick a good quality pet food:
http://www.api4animals.com/facts.php?p=3...
Cooking for cats can be very intensive because they have very particular nutritional requirements. This book can tell you more about that:
http://www.amazon.com/pitcairns-complete...
Follow these steps:
1. Buy food and bowl.
2. Fill bowl with food.
3. Put bowl of food down, in front of cat.
4. Walk away, repeat when needed.
You do realize they sell premade cat food in the pet section of grocery stores?
We use Iams.
Go to the grocery store. Get Iams or Purina dry cat food. Put a handful in a bowl, and refill when necessary. If you want to give them something special, give them a spoonful or two of canned tuna to go with the dry food once a day. Make sure they always have plenty of clean, fresh water. That's it!
The "easiest way to feed a cat"?
Via the mouth.
I recommend fedding your cat a raw food diet. Do some research and decide whether or not it's the right move for you. I'm feeding my kittens that, and it's easy, affordable and manageable. You're supposed to give cats 2% - 3% of their body weight each day.
If you do choose to go dry, choose a good brand of dry food with holistic ingredients. Don't go for Science Diet or a similar brand. Go into a pet store and most have holistic brands to choose from. I recommend Felidae.
do you own a cat...if you do then use his cat food and put it outside if the cat doesn't have an owner or seems to b lost take him in and put flyer's up please do this if you don't know if he's stray or lost he can get hit by a car or eaten by dogs its sad cz it has hap-pend before please do it before it is TO LATE :) np for the advise i Love answering questions including ones that r serious like this one
Get Science Diet it is sold in pet stores. Put the cat food in a bowl and let your cat eat! Get the dry food. Make sure the cat food you buy does NOT say by-product. It is bad for your cat.

What is the easiest was to tame a wild kitten about 4 months old?

I have this kitten who is absolutely adorable and also wild. he is only about 4 months old and he has been coming up to the house and eating my outside cats food. i don't mind but i want to tame him so we can pet him and keep him around.
Answers:
Wait it out. Just be around. Pet and play with your cats. The little one will advance after observing you. Talk to it - name it - talk to it. Pull a string around the yard. You never know. Eventually the kitten may just jump in and play. When it's sure it can trust you, the kitten will come closer and closer on it's own. Instead of picking it up for cuddling right away, maybe just pet it for some days first.
After you catch him, let him bite you until he is tired of it. It is a freakin wild cat. I hear they make great pets.
P
catch him and continually pet and hold him until he tames down but you gonna get clawed and bit in the process.
you will have to trap him and bring him inside and keep him in a kennel for a while so that you can forceably hold him.. feed him canned food only when you are there and can hold him - if he is truely wild (not feral) this will involve a lot of stuggle and hissing...and will be very hard (feral much easier)...
gradually you can let it out in a small room - and so on...
Give it some food from your hand. As the cat eats it pet the cat. Scratch it behind the ears. Do this everyday day until it used to you. After that bring it in the house and trim the claws. In no time he will be tamed. Cats can be wild if they haven't been neutered so maybe you should neuter him.
You should not invite outside animals into your home because they never truly lose their wild nature. Wild animals do not make good pets. They are dangerous! If you want to get a cat that is not fully tamed, go to the animal shelter near you and get a stray cat that has been brought in.

What is the cutest thing your cat or kitten has every done?

Cats are super cute. What's the cutest thing your cat or kitten has ever done? What's the funniest thing he/she has ever done? My one cat chirps at birds.

I used to be an Admin, and I received a beautiful flower arrangement for Admin Pros Day. My cat Circe (black long hair with a big ol' poofy tail) was VERY interested in the flowers, and spent a lot of time with her nose right in the arrangement, head-butting the flowers and babies breath. She finally, very carefully, pulled a red carnation out of the foam in the arrangement and walked off with it. We got of picture of her being a Flamenco Kitty! It was so funny!
My cat Lestat once brought me a tissue when I was crying. He also liked incense and would bring me the pack and meow loudly to get me to light some.

What is the chances of having a male cat neutered and him still spraying the house?

He is getting done tomorrow morning and I'm just hoping that it will work so he can come in the house.
Answers:
Getting my cat neutered worked for me, and he was about 4 or 5 when I finally got him neutered. He just got really depressed after that, keep your cat active and happy and you'll be fine!
how old is the cat? if he has started to spray before getting him fixed than it might be too late. but its still a good thing to get done... but if hes less than 8 -9 months and hasnt started to spray than you should be fine!
If he's fully grown, you are at risk.
I believe Animluv's answer is correct. If the cat had begun spraying before he was neutered, it's probably too late.
My daughter tells me that even spayed females will "mark" their territory, but whatever they do when they wiggle their tails is odorless to human senses.
Reason the subject came up, I saw one of my cats back up to something and her tail jiggled, just the way I've seen male cats spray.
well i am pretty sure that it will work becuz my cat got neutred and he hasnt sprayed in the house for ever so yah..
i hope everything works out for u and ur cat well good luck u duck! : )
Your cat will still spray for about the first month then he should stop at lest that is what mine did.

What is the best website to purchase quality cat furniture that's not too pricey?

Looking mainly for a great cat tree, cat condo, or cat gym that's around 5 feet high.
Answers:
Drsfosterandsmith.com. They are still expensive (all cat trees are) but a whole lot cheaper than the competitors. They also offer a lot more different selections. Or, for even cheaper, I bought a cat tree that goes to the ceiling for 35 dollars at Wal-mart. It's nothing special though.
Petsmart and Petco have a lot...and then there is always WalMart and Target...
Ha ha...I just realized that you said website! Oops! Well, I guess you can probably order things from those places online too! Umm.. craigslist is good, and so is ebay...a lot of the time e-bay has brand new stuff(tags and all) for really cheap!
Honestly, I got both of mine off of Craigslist! I got my first one a 3 tier cat tree for 20.00 in mint condition and the other is a foldable cat gym for 12.00 (and I also got some free cat food, lol)
you would be amazed what you can get for cheap on craigslist.com or even asking for it on freecycle.
This is a great website for all pets: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/sh...

What is the best way to travel with a cat? on the road, food, etc?

Answers:
I traveled with my cat in a car from Ohio to FL. The vet gave me a sedative for her. I will never sedate her again. She looked so miserable. The best thing is to put them in a carrier somewhere stable in the car, so they don't get bumped around. Don't put them in direct sunlight. Offer food %26 water, but don't be suprised if they won't eat in the car. My cat didn't eat, drink, or use the bathroom while in the car. She would do everything in the hotel at night or once we got To Florida. I took her out of the carrier %26 held her %26 petted her periodically too. It can be hard for them since they don't go on car rides much.
the best way would be to get a cat carrier then but a container that straps to the bars so it can eat along the way also have a lead for it so it can come out of the car and go to the toilet make sure you have a good lead you don't want your cat getting away. good luck
I moved from Florida to Wisconsin with 2 cats. Each had their own carrier, and each had a half a children's Benadryl tablet in the morning (vet's advice). They were fairly calm most of the time. I stopped for a break from driving every 4 hours or so and when I went to use a restroom or get some food, I let them out of the carriers, but not the car. This gave them time to stretch. There was a litter plan on the floor in front of the back seat, and they got fresh food and water. I had a friend with me and whenever one of us would open the door, we'd just be sure the cats weren't ready to run.
I researched pet friendly hotels along the way. (The cats thought it was a hoot - they could sit in a window and see everybody walk by and talk to them). The trip took us two days and we all did just fine.
OKAY--Now, you did not say how far you are planning to travel or if you'll be stopping along the way (as in, long distance--requires an overnight stay in a motel, etc.). I'll take a guess that this is going to be a long distance travel. So, your best bet is to put your car in a cat carrier, and if available, place the carrier on the seat (passenger seat) right next to you. By being right beside you, this makes your cat feel much calmer--especially if he/she is not used to traveling in the car. Depending on what type of vehicle you have, it will be safer for kitty if you have a way to run the lap seat belt thru some part of the holes in the carrier. As far as food and water---forget it--a cat will NOT eat, drink or go to the bathroom while "on the move"--I know, I've done this many times.
Now, in the event that your cat IS used to riding in the car with you, you can do what I did with only ONE of the many cats I've had. He liked riding in the car, and all I had to do was put him in a pillow case (this is strictly for safety-sake in the event that your cat gets out of the car--he/she will automatically try to find it's way back home). The pillow case allows freedom of movement, and the cat is able to breathe well. All it does is simply "blindfold" him/her so kitty cannot see where they are going, so even if your cat does get out of the car, the most likely move it will make is to right under the car.
If you are going to have to spend a night or two at a motel, take your cats own water and food (dry only) dishes and a DISPOSABLE litter box. Do NOT be alarmed if your cat does NOT eat one bite or use the litter box---most will NOT in a strange place--mine never did. And, do NOT put a water dish in a cat carrier with kitty while you're on the move in your vehicle. Your cat is NOT going to drink, and the dish is just going to spill over getting the carrier and kitty all wet. Also---if you feel the need to let your cat out of the carrier in an attempt to go to the bathroom---make sure you have a VERY GOOD HARNESS---NOT a leash on your kitty. ALL cats can get out of a leash unless the thing is literally strangling them, and we don't want that. If this is a fairly small cat, a ferret harness works very well.
I hope this has been of some help to you and given you a couple of options, and the knowledge of what to expect---the fact that your cat is not going to eat, drink or go "potty" while you are traveling--not even in a motel room---mine never did.
Have a nice trip, and yes, it's fine to take your kitty, but do try to have kitty in the passenger seat next to you--this is calming to them, and the cat will more than likely just lie down and go to sleep. . . . after initially expressing it's dis-pleasure of being in the cat carrier. Bon Voyage!

What is the best way to stop cats scratching on the carpet?

Answers:
clip their nails once a week and be careful are take them to professional--you CAN hurt them.
Scratching Posts!! total godsend. get a bit of cat nip and rub it on a cat scratching post, your cat will go nuts on the scratching post and leave the carpet alone!
(Or pepper your carpet!)
get a scratching post.or like a play ground they have them at like target and pet stores.
Kick them..no just kidding. That wouldnt be very nice.
Scratching posts are great!
Keep a spray bottle of water with you , and when they do it spray them. This should give them the negative reinforcment they need to teach them it is not acceptable behavior.
I had my cat declawed (when I had one) however, he still had his back claws and while it helped, he still would claw stuff with his hind legs.
Trim their claws slightly, and then grab them gently from teh neck when you see them scratch, say No, and put them on their scratching post. If you do that consistently a few times, they'll get the idea.
Change ur carpet.
or as my friend said ,add pepper powder to carpet.
It's a nature of cat.Idon't think it wil change its approach.
Trim it's claws and get a scatching post.
Get it a scratching post and trim their nails often
If you don't already have a scratching post then that would be the first step. Trimming there nails regularly prevents damage to ur carpet but does not stop them. You can get a spray from your pet shop or just spray with anything that has a citrus smell, orange peels would also work. Try cover the area in tin foil (if possible - i'm not sure if ur cat scratches in one area or the whole carpet). When u catch him scratching immediately pick him up and put him in a seperate room for a few minutes. If he goes back and scratches do it again until he gets the message. Pepper also has a bad smell so if u sprinkle that on then it might help. Vicks vapour rub works like a charm but u have to put it on every day and also it sometimes leaves an oily residue. Before trying any of these tips wash the carpet thouroughly with an odour neutraliser, for example bicarb and water, it absorbs the smell. Cats scratch to mark there territory and it leaves a smell that they are attracted to so they come back for more. So getting rid of the smell is the first step. Sorry about the essay.
scratching is normal for them because of their nails but try showing him to scratch in a piece of wood.
Give the cats something better to scratch on, such as a nice tall scratching post (about 3' tall) with a nice wide base so it won't tip over. That will satisfy both horizontal and vertical scratchers. You can make it yourself with a 2x4 and some plywood and a big bolt and washer. You can cover it with old carpet or a carpet remnant. These are very sturdy and will last for years. You can re-cover them when the carpet gets tacky. To attract the cat, you can rub catnip on the post or use a catnip spray. They're fun to watch because they look so serious while they're scratching. The scratching is instinctive whether or not the cat has claws.
